There are various situations where a coil is required that cannot be wound on an iron core in order to minimize size. A common way to produce this is by using bondable wire which has an extra coating that bonds the adjacent wires.
Self Supporting Coils

Self supporting coils are frequently used for radio frequency tuning, suppression and high saturation inverter chokes.
Additional applications for these self supporting coils are pot cores where bobbins would consume too much space, air inductors, or in unique applications required for either the military or medical services.
